Nike is my slogan today. I want to talk about self love and self compassion. In a world where everything is either “all about me” or “all about everyone else”, there is a serious lack of “love yourself” attitudes. I live in a culture where pride is the biggest evil you want to avoid (and this is a true thing….pride/ego/boastfulness is definitely something that makes your life harder), but without talking about too much religious cultural values, I want to look at the repercussions of the way you see yourself and the way you treat yourself and the impact that the attitude you have about yourself has on the life you live.
Self love is defined as regard for ones’ well being and overall happiness. Self love is a desirable trait! Self compassion is showing yourself the same love and empathy as you would show someone you love. It’s easy to be forgiving to people you love, but many times is so difficult to show yourself the same compassion when you make a mistake. The ability that we have to be kind to ourselves increases our self love and even our overall attitude about the world around us.
Don’t get me wrong–there is definitely a fine line that is drawn between self love and self esteem. The first is something that improves your overall outlook on the world around you. The second is much like the quality of narcissism. It is one thing to love yourself, and it’s another to be IN LOVE with yourself. I have come to the conclusion that the key to success in life is to talk to yourself the way that you talk to the people around you. There is a direct correlation between the way that you treat people and the way that you feel about yourself. I have seen that when I practice self love and self compassion-it’s so much easier to see the beautiful qualities in others. Everyone is different–find something that makes you feel the love.
This is a huge deal. Barbara De Angelis said, “Love and kindness are never wasted–they always make a difference.” This goes for yourself as well. It’s time to be kind to you. You are capable of amazing things, friends. See what happens when you just do it.
